I wore this outfit in the Fruits contest basically to show off my skills as a milliner.
The bonnet was blocked and hand sewn by me from black straw, lace, satin ribbon and black roses.

Got it's name from people commenting that I looked like I was in mourning....

I'd love to make a bonnet like that...but I have no idea where to start. Can you recommend any good resources/links or suggestions on how to start?

Well, it's actually not something you can just make at home. I'm doing a millinery course at TAFE, and you need to learn how to block straw (which I found was the hardest material to block), sew it, wire it, etc. You also need to purchase blocks and equiptment, which I'm in the process of doing and it's not cheap.

I would recommend purchasing a pattern from a haberdashery and making one from material, I bought a pattern a few months ago but haven't a chance to try it out. I found it in the Costume section of the Pattern books.

Thank you for the pointers
This will be my first foray into this kind of stuff....I'll have to go searching for a pattern. :D

Wow. Nice outfit. I wanted to have a go at making hats, but it seems really difficult! You've done a great job.

By the way, your shoes are absolutely to DIE for! :D

Thank you ^_^ the shoes are T.U.K. if you're wondering.

Nah Hats making isn't that hard, i mean it takes money and time but it's no harder to learn then any other skill. I'm going to post another pic of this bonnet as you can't see all of the detail properly.
